Internal Sata HDD random disappearance
#1
Exclamation
Hi, I bought this unit a few days ago and the first thing I did was add a new Maxtor hdd sata 3 (WD10SPZX), I created a new partition and I called it D: done some speed tests, data exchanges, etc. everything in the norm.
After some restarts the hdd has completely disappeared both from windows and from bios, the thing immediately seemed a little strange I restarted again few times and magically reappeared without losing any data.
Now this thing happens totally randomly and I do not know who to blame, maybe the bios has some self-configuration???
The HDD is well connected and when it appears it works without problems even for long periods, so it's not even damaged.
What can it be???

Thx.

Have you tried reseating the bottom half , move the sliders underneath and pull apart and then re connect, this might help .

It also happens to me sometimes. In these cases I disconnect the expansion bay and reconnect again.

The system BIOS is very limited.

Hi guys thx for the replay, I tried what you told me but nothing changed, it also happened that windows detected the hdd all alone after about ten minutes from the boot.
I would not want it to be a problem with system drivers but at that point it makes no sense that the bios do not detect it, could it be a heat problem??? The average hdd temperature is on 50-55° Celsius but I think it is not too high as a temperature.
I will continue to do some more testing while I wait.

Ok I have done other tests, so after trying again the "trick" disassembled and reassembled of expansion bay, I tried and the hdd was visible at that point for 6 hours in a row I watched movies and various movies that I had previously moved. In this time frame I've never had a crash and the hdd has always worked perfectly, at this point I restarted and I realized immediately that during loading logo Acepc, the wheel runs for much longer as if it were doing something more, when I arrived on the desktop I checked immediately and the hdd was gone again.
At this point I think it is very difficult that it is a hardware problem, my thought is that the bios for some strange reason voluntarily exclude my hdd, maybe there is a more updated version of the bios that maybe has a greater compatibility or that fixes this type of problem.
I want to understand well the cause of this problem, because if I send this unit back and take a new one maybe even that will have the same problem.

I am having a similiar problem. Except the drive does not just disappear but also begins to tick/click like a failing or failed HDD. Sometime I can re-seat the drive and expansion bay and then the drive is re-detected but only for a short time. Maybe 2-5 minutes. Then it starts clicking again and disappears from explorer and disk management. Huh

Sounds like the drive doesnt have enough power , if you are using an old drive then these units require more power and you should think about upgrading the psu.

TerryXX  I'm having the same issue with mine....  i have tried a 5A 12 power cord and it still goes in and out for me... i think this has to do with bios.
Im running win10 on 2.5" ssd and some times it sees it sometimes it doesn't.
