mSATA drive is not being recognized in any way
#1
Hi,

I have an ACEPC AK1 and I bought a Kingspec mSATA drive, 128GB.

I tried everything, but my unit does not recognize the drive. It does not appear neither in Windows nor Setup.

The problem is not the mSATA drive, because I also bought a mSATA to 2.5" adapter and it works perfectly when it is connected through the Expansion Bay or in a USB port, using a proper case.

Even after connecting it using the adapter, formatting it in Windows, I cannot make the computer read the drive when it is connected through mSATA port.

Could you help me.

Regards,

Can Windows see it in "Disk Management"? In general, you need to prepare the new disk from this location.

Have you reinstalled the mSATA drive in the expansion bay to verify that it is still working properly? I would do that to make sure it is still working and if it is, reinstall it and check again. If that fails I would just use it in the expansion bay with the mSATA-2.5in adapter.

For what it's worth, I recently bought the same brand and size mSATA drive and it works fine in my AK1.

If it's connected through the mSATA port I cannot see it in Windows. If I connect it using my 2.5 adapter abs a USB case then it is visible and it works perfectly. I prepared the disk using the adapter and the USB case.

Could you please explain better what you are suggesting?

After formatting the drive using the adapter and the USB case I tried to connect it through the mSATA port but the drive remained non accessible.

It is not available in device manager. I am an experienced user, I know these things. It is just like the drive was not there. It is not detected even inside setup. I believe my mSTA slot my be broken.

My suggestion was to re-connect your mSATA drive via the adapter and the USB case just to see if the mSATA drive is still working properly.

Unless you are wearing an anti-static grounding strap there's always the possibility of static damage when handling these devices and my suggestion supposes that damage occurred after you did your initial work with the adapter and before/during when you connected the mSATA drive to the AK1's internal mSATA connector.

If the mSATA drive still works via the adapter and the USB case then no damage has occurred and you're right back where you stated with the mSATA drive not working via the internal mSATA connector BUT at least you know the mSATA drive itself is OK.

The mSATA drive is working perfectly. I used it today with the adapter and a USB case.

Have you inspected the mSATA connector inside the AK1? Maybe one or more of the contacts on the connector itself is dirty or covered by dirt/debris/oxides. Usually the insertion of an mSATA device is enough to displace dirt/debris/oxides but it might take several insert/removal cycles to completely clean off an occluded contact. You could try a mild solvent or alcohol to clean the contacts while power is OFF to the AK1. Use a microfiber or similar lint-free cloth to wipe the contacts.
